Types of Auto Insurance.
What is liability insurance?
Liability insurance covers you from claims that come out of a collision in where another party was injured or property was damaged because of your negligence. Most states require this type of coverage. You can either purchase Combined Single Limit coverage or Split Limits. Read on…
What is single limit insurance?
Single Limit is the combination of Bodily Injury and Property Damage coverage. The total coverage is a combined amount of Bodily Injury and Property. If you have $100,000 Single Limit coverage, it means that the maximum amount the insurance company will pay for both coverages is $100,000.
What is 15/30/5?
These numbers often refer to the minimum amounts of liability coverage required by a State to operate a motor vehicle. These minimum limits are for California, for example. This is also known as Split Limit insurance. The first two numbers relate to Bodily Injury coverage and the first number is the total amount the insurance company will pay for injury to one person in the collision. The second number is the total amount of coverage for all persons who were injured in the collision. The third number relates to property coverage.
Property Damage
The Property Damage Liability part of your insurance policy will pay the property damages up to your coverage limit. Typical damage is to other vehicles and objects such as fences. This coverage extends to you or someone else covered on your policy during an at fault accident, which causes damage to someone else's property.
Bodily Injury
Bodily injury coverage is the part of your policy that pays for the lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering, and expenses of the person or people you injure outside of your vehicle in a collision. This extends to you or anyone else who is covered on your policy and causes the injury.
Is one type of insurance coverage less expensive than the other?
Yes. This will depend on the carrier, the deductible, the amount of coverage requested, among other variables.
What is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?
Uninsured Motorist coverage covers damage to your vehicle and injuries you or your passengers sustain as a result of a collision with an uninsured driver. This would also provide coverage for hit and run incidents. States vary on required limits for this coverage. Some states only require bodily injury coverage whereas others require bodily injury and property damage coverages. Other states even allow a waiver of uninsured motorist coverage if you have collision insurance.
Is liability insurance required for all drivers?
Yes.
How much Uninsured Motorist coverage is sufficient?
You should always have as much insurance as possible and this applies to Uninsured Motorist coverage and your regular insurance.
What is Underinsured Coverage?
Underinsured Motorist coverage is required in case of an accident with a motorist who does not have enough liability coverage to pay for injuries or damage in a collision that is his/her fault. State requirements are listed in the “Your State Requirements” section.
What is Medical coverage?
This pays for medical expenses that you, your family or passengers in your vehicle incur because of injuries you cause in a collision. This coverage pays for a doctor, hospitalization, prescriptions, an ambulance, funeral expenses, no matter who is responsible in the collision.
Is Bodily Injury coverage and Medical Coverage the same?
No. Bodily Injury coverage pays for the medical expenses of pedestrians and occupants of another vehicle if you are responsible for the collision. It also pays expenses such as lost wages, and pain and suffering. Medical coverage, however, reimburses you and passengers in your vehicle for medical expenses resulting from the accident, no matter who is responsible.
What is collision insurance?
Collision insurance pays for repair or replacement of your vehicle for any loss resulting from a collision with another object, excluding an animal (animals would be handled under your comprehensive coverage). Current market value of your car is assessed and collision pays for the repair or replacement, less the amount of your deductible.
What is comprehensive coverage?
Comprehensive insurance is coverage for damage such as vandalism, theft, smoke, fire, or a collision with an animal, etc. Comprehensive insurance is required if you lease your car or buy it and have a loan to pay. If your car is not worth much, you may want to skip this coverage to keep your premiums down.
What does deductible mean?
This is the amount you pay before the insurance company starts paying. If the damage to the vehicle if $5,000 and your deductible is $500, the insurance company will pay $4500.
What vehicles can be covered by my insurance?
Only vehicles owned and registered by you will be covered and that’s assuming they are listed on the policy.
How can I get lower insurance premiums?
There are many ways to qualify for lower insurance premiums.
Keep your driving record clean and if you ever get a moving violation, attend a driver improvement or traffic school to keep the points off your record.
- Taking a Mature Driving, Safe Driving, Accident Prevention Course
Many insurance companies will give discounts to drivers after completion of one of these courses. Inquire with your agent or company directly to see if any of these discounts apply to you.
- Having Anti-Theft Devices Installed on Your Car
Alarms, systems such as Lo-Jac or other similar devices will often result in discounts.
- Having Airbags on Your Vehicle
Airbags are now standard on many vehicles but if they are an option, by all means always have one installed. Studies have shown they are a major reason for a reduction in traffic fatalities and they will also result in an insurance discount.
How do I know if I’m getting a good deal on insurance?
Like anything else, simply do your homework. Shop around and get the best price. Make sure to compare quality, credibility and price. Your Save More Insurance Services, Inc. representative can definitely help.
How quickly can I get insured?
That really depends on you. Assuming you find a company and rate that you like, proper paperwork will need to be filled out and payment received. The process shouldn’t take longer than a few days, but will depend on you.
Can I cancel if I find a better rate?
Most insurance policies can be cancelled at any time. You will of course forfeit whatever amount of money that has been used for coverage, but should receive a timely refund for the rest.
